Beneath the tranquil facade of a rural home, few would suspect the existence of a robust underground tunnel system and 24/7 surveillance cameras, all serving a transnational tiger trafficking ring.
Recently, public opinion in Thanh Hoa province was stirred by the news that the Provincial Police Investigation Agency had issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain two individuals, Hoang Dinh Dat and Nguyen Doan Son. This is the result of a meticulous special operation aimed at dismantling a network violating regulations on the protection of endangered and rare animals.
Tiger bunker discovered in residential area.
The story began with unusual activity at the home of Hoang Dinh Dat (born in 1974, residing in Hamlet 7, Xuan Lap Commune, Thanh Hoa Province). Through intelligence gathering, detectives from the Economic Police Department discovered that Dat was not just an ordinary citizen but was involved in shady transactions related to wildlife.
To evade law enforcement, Dat transformed his residence into a veritable "fortress." He constructed a deep underground bunker, equipped it with sturdy iron doors, and installed a dense network of surveillance cameras around the house for security. However, as the saying goes, "a thick rind can be pierced by a sharp nail," and all of Dat's sophisticated tactics were eventually detected by the police.
On February 11, 2026, reconnaissance teams simultaneously raided Dat's residence. In the underground cellar, a horrifying scene unfolded: two large tiger carcasses, their internal organs removed and frozen solid, along with a series of specialized tools and pots used for cooking tiger bone extract.
The 2 billion VND deal and the cross-border journey.
During the investigation, the truth about this network gradually came to light. Dat confessed to using the Zalo social network to connect with and conduct transactions with Nguyen Doan Son (born in 1995, residing in Thieu Trung commune, Thanh Hoa province).
Two tigers, weighing nearly 400kg in total, were valued at almost 2 billion VND. This is a huge sum for an illegal transaction. Notably, the origin of these tigers is not simple at all.
Continuing the investigation, on February 13, 2026, authorities apprehended Nguyen Doan Son while he was hiding in Hac Thanh ward. Son confessed that he had personally gone to the border area of Ha Tinh province to buy these two tigers from a Lao national, then illegally transported them to Thanh Hoa to hand over to Dat to be processed into tiger bone extract for illicit profit.
The high price for disregarding the law.
Tigers are classified as Group IB animals – a category of endangered, rare, and precious animals that require strict protection. The buying, selling, possession, and slaughtering of this species constitutes a serious violation of the law.
Based on the documents and evidence collected, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Investigation Agency has initiated a criminal case and indicted the following individuals:
Hoang Dinh Dat: Charged with "Violating regulations on the protection of endangered, rare, and precious animals" under Clause 1, Article 244 of the Penal Code. Nguyen Doan Son: Charged with a similar offense in the role of a supply chain link.
This case serves as a stern warning to those who intend to enrich themselves illegally at the expense of wildlife. Currently, the provincial police are continuing to expand the investigation, determined to eradicate all individuals involved in this network and bring them to justice.
This incident once again reminds the community of the importance of nature conservation. Don't let rumors about the supposed benefits of "tiger bone" lead you to contribute to crimes that push rare animal species to the brink of extinction.
