On March 10th, a video circulated on social media showing a female tourist having her necklace snatched while visiting the Lotus Pagoda area. The incident caused a stir and prompted an investigation by authorities.
The video quickly attracted attention online as it captured the entire process of a group of individuals allegedly staging a jostling scene to approach the victim and snatch their belongings in just a few seconds.
According to the video, a woman wearing a red shirt was moving through a crowded stream of tourists when she was suddenly surrounded by a group of people. The individuals continuously moved around her, forming a circle that made the area crowded and chaotic.
While the victim struggled to escape the crowd, two women standing close behind her quickly approached. One raised her hand to her forehead as if to block her vision, while the other, from behind, suddenly snatched the necklace from the tourist's neck. The entire act happened very quickly, reportedly in less than two seconds. After snatching the valuables, the group immediately dispersed into the crowded street.
The sudden jerk startled the female tourist. Suspecting someone was behind her, the victim immediately grabbed a woman's hand to check. However, this woman appeared to be merely a shield during the attack. While the victim was still confused, the other perpetrators quickly fled the scene.
Speaking to the press, a representative of the An Ninh commune government stated that the local authorities had received information about the incident that occurred at the Tan Hue Vien Company's tourist area. Immediately after receiving the complaint and the video circulating on social media, the police quickly launched an investigation.
According to a representative of the An Ninh commune police, authorities have initially arrested one suspect in connection with the incident. However, the identity of this person has not yet been released as the investigation is still ongoing.
The An Ninh commune police are coordinating with the Can Tho City Police to track down the remaining suspects and gather evidence to complete the case file for processing according to the law.
According to initial information from authorities, the group of suspects appeared to be staging a scene by jostling in a crowd to approach the victim. This is considered a fairly common tactic, often seen in crowded places such as tourist areas, festivals, or markets.
Following the incident, authorities coordinated with the tourist area management unit to strengthen security measures. Loudspeakers in the area were also used to broadcast warnings, reminding visitors to be vigilant. In addition, police deployed more personnel to patrol and monitor crowded areas to reduce the risk of similar thefts and robberies.
The Lotus Pagoda is a newly constructed structure within the premises of Tan Hue Vien Company and officially opened to visitors on January 28, 2026. With its striking architecture and spacious grounds, it quickly became a popular check-in spot attracting many locals and tourists.
Especially during holidays, Tet (Lunar New Year), and weekends, a large number of people flock to visit. At many times, traffic congestion occurs on National Highway 1A in this area due to the high volume of vehicles. However, the concentration of large crowds also poses a risk of illegal activities if not strictly controlled.
