Fishermen thought they were seeing a strange white object in the middle of the ocean, but experts say it's shocking.

An extremely rare albino blue whale has been discovered in Loreto Bay National Park, attracting the attention of scientists and providing important data for research and conservation efforts for the planet's largest species.

A remarkable discovery has just been made in Mexican waters, where researchers found an albino blue whale that is almost completely white. This rare sighting immediately attracted the attention of scientists and marine animal enthusiasts worldwide.

According to a press release issued by Mexico's National Commission for Nature Reserves on March 6, this particular specimen was recorded in the waters of Loreto Bay National Park, located off the coast of Loreto on the Baja California Peninsula.

Upon its discovery, the whale, which was almost entirely white, became the center of attention. Scientists said that encountering a whale with such unusual coloration in its natural environment is extremely rare. Therefore, this discovery is considered a significant event for the field of marine biology.

During this season's survey, researchers confirmed the presence of approximately 30 different blue whales in the Loreto area. Among them were many mother-calf pairs. This indicates that the waters here are playing a crucial role as a breeding and refuge area for the planet's largest whale species.

Another notable observation during this year's viewing season was the increased number of blue whales sighted near shore compared to previous years. Scientists believe this change may be related to the increasingly abundant food sources in the area.

According to marine biologists, increased nutrient levels in the water have boosted the growth of krill, small mollusks that serve as a primary food source for blue whales. When krill populations thrive, whales tend to move closer to shore to feed, which also makes observation and research easier.

According to data from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, an adult blue whale can consume up to 4 tons of krill per day. It is also considered the largest creature to have ever existed on Earth, with lengths exceeding 30 meters and weights reaching around 200 tons.

What makes this whale discovery special is its albinism. This is a genetic disorder that occurs when an individual receives mutated genes from both parents. As a result, the body cannot produce melanin – the pigment that determines the color of skin, fur, and eyes.

According to National Geographic, albinism in mammals is already rare. For whales, the rate is even lower. Scientists estimate that only about 0.0025% of whales worldwide have the albinism mutation. This means that the chance of encountering such an individual in the wild is almost extremely rare.

Albino individuals are typically white or off-white almost entirely. However, this characteristic can sometimes put them at a disadvantage in their natural habitat. They may be more vulnerable to strong sunlight or have difficulty camouflaged against dangers.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the blue whale is currently classified as endangered in the Red List. Experts estimate that there are only about 10,000–15,000 individuals left in the wild worldwide.
