A post sharing the story of a motorbike taxi driver in Ho Chi Minh City who was repeatedly having his rides canceled by customers because he used an old motorbike has attracted a lot of attention from the online community in recent days.
The post contains a conversation between a ride-hailing motorbike driver and his passenger: "Luckily, you didn't cancel the trip. Today, I've had 4 or 5 rides canceled already." / "Why were there so many cancellations, sir?" / "Because people saw on the app that you're riding an old motorbike and you look quite old, so they canceled. Now, customers prefer scooters."
The post included a picture of the weary face of the motorbike taxi driver and his worn-out shirt. The story was widely shared across social media platforms. Netizens left many comments expressing sympathy for the hardships faced by the "motorbike taxi driver."
According to our investigation, the ride-hailing motorbike driver mentioned in the story is Mr. Nguyen Van Son (born in 1962, currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City).
Mr. Son confirmed to the media that the story about his ride being canceled by a customer because he was riding a dilapidated motorbike was completely untrue. Suddenly becoming a "victim" in this unfortunate story designed to evoke sympathy, Mr. Son was surprised and confused.
Mr. Son is originally from Hai Duong (now Hai Phong city) but has lived in Ho Chi Minh City since childhood. He has two children: a son who is currently 43 years old and a daughter who is 33 years old. Both of his children are married and have stable jobs. At the age of 63, Mr. Son has become both a paternal and maternal grandfather.
Previously, Mr. Son worked as a construction worker. Since August 2024, he has switched to working as a ride-hailing motorbike driver. He usually works in the evenings, and spends his days resting. His wife is a scrap metal dealer. The family's finances are stable.
A few days ago, Mr. Son was shown a social media post by his granddaughter containing false information about him. The post even included his picture, which surprised him.
"My daughter read the article and immediately called to ask, 'What did they write about Dad?' I found it really strange. I've always driven a scooter, never a manual motorcycle, and I've never had a customer cancel a trip. I don't understand why they would use my image and write such false information," Mr. Son recounted.
On December 23rd, a representative of a male singer contacted Mr. Son. From this, he learned that a relative of his had contacted the singer, expressing a desire for the singer's assistance during Mr. Son's difficult time.
"When I received a call from the singer's representative, I explained that it was just a misunderstanding, and the story about me being in trouble and needing help was untrue. However, he still wanted to visit my house. My wife and I happily welcomed him," Mr. Son recounted.
On the afternoon of December 24th, the male singer visited Mr. Son's house and offered to give him a new motorbike to make his work more convenient. However, Mr. Son refused to accept it.
"I'm not in any difficulty, so why would I accept help? There are so many other people in difficult circumstances who need support. My life is still stable and much more fortunate. I thank and appreciate the singer's kindness, but I cannot accept this gift," Mr. Son said.
As soon as he realized there was a misunderstanding on social media, Mr. Son wanted to speak out to clarify the situation but didn't know how. Mr. Son hopes the male singer can clarify the matter on his behalf so that no one gets into trouble because of this story.
"Social media is complex, and I just hope that people will be vigilant when reading or listening to anything, to avoid being deceived by malicious individuals," Mr. Son said.
Currently, Mr. Son and his wife live with their youngest daughter's family in a small house in Ho Chi Minh City. Although their life isn't affluent, it's peaceful, and they enjoy spending each day with their loved ones and family.
