Violette Wautier , a Thai singer and actress of Belgian descent, has been at the center of a media crisis for her performance of the theme song at the opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games (hosted by Thailand).
This highly anticipated performance quickly became a hot topic on social media after viewers spotted blatant lip-syncing during the live broadcast.
Lip-syncing Suspicions: Technical Malfunction or Lack of Professionalism?
Specifically, right from the moment the song was performed, Thai media and audience unanimously pointed out that Violette Wautier's vocals on stage were off-key and didn't match the sound from the background music. The suspicion that a performance of national significance like the SEA Games Opening Ceremony was lip-synced quickly became a "hot topic" and attracted significant public attention.
However, the cause of this incident was not entirely due to the singer's wishes. According to the reputable Thai newspaper Khaosod, the problem stemmed from the organizers' request. The organizers required Violette to lip-sync 100% on the opening night to ensure sound quality and the smooth running of the large-scale event.
The performance was supposed to be entirely lip-synced, but an ironic technical glitch occurred: Violette's live microphone was unexpectedly turned on live, while her in-ear headphones went silent. This prevented the singer from hearing her real voice to adjust and synchronize with the pre-recorded backing track, resulting in her being off-key and creating clear evidence of lip-syncing.
Violette Wautier's Confession: "I Was Only Doing What I Was Asked."
Immediately after the incident, Violette Wautier officially spoke out to explain and apologize to the audience. She affirmed that she was only following the organizers' lip-syncing requirements, and the live microphone malfunction was entirely an unintentional technical error. The singer also emphasized that she rarely lip-syncs throughout her career.
In a personal message, Violette expressed: "From today's opening performance at the 2025 SEA Games, many people must have noticed Vee singing off-key on live broadcast. Honestly, I'm very upset, and what happened was a real mistake. However, understanding that lip-syncing is necessary (as required by the organizers), Vee tried her best to ensure the best possible image. But what happened was, I don't know where the misunderstanding occurred, when Vee's microphone was broadcast live."
This rare technical glitch inadvertently exposed the organizers' request for lip-syncing, and significantly damaged the reputation of the talented singer.
