In the history of the K-pop industry, few stories are as iconic as the journey of Park Jin Young, the founder of JYP Entertainment. However, this "mogul" has recently announced his retirement.
Few people know that before becoming one of the most powerful figures in the Korean entertainment industry, Park Jin Young was outright rejected when he applied to SM Entertainment. From an unrecognized young man, Park Jin Young rose to build his own empire and became a formidable rival to the very company that had once rejected him.
It all started with a passion for music, but was rejected by SM Entertainment.
Park Jin Young was born on December 13, 1971, in Seoul, South Korea. From a young age, he showed a strong passion for music and always dreamed of becoming a professional artist. In 1994, while still a student at Yonsei University, Park Jin Young officially debuted his first musical work. Although he didn't possess the striking appearance of an idol by the standards of the time, he impressed with his distinctive voice, captivating performance style, and outstanding songwriting ability.
In the mid-1990s, SM Entertainment, under the leadership of Lee Soo Man, almost held a dominant position in the Korean music industry. Many young artists aspired to join the company for career advancement opportunities.
Park Jin Young was no exception. He had a face-to-face interview with Lee Soo Man hoping to join SM Entertainment. However, the result was completely the opposite of what he expected. Park Jin Young was not only rejected but also not given the opportunity to intern at the company.
JYP Entertainment was founded.
After being rejected, Park Jin Young continued his independent music career for three years. During this time, he gained experience, observed the market, and gradually formed his own vision of the entertainment industry.
In 1997, he officially founded JYP Entertainment, opening a new chapter in his career. From a young artist, Park Jin Young entered the world of "moguls" in the Korean entertainment industry. This bold decision subsequently completely changed the landscape of K-pop.
One of JYP Entertainment's first successes was the boy group GOD. This is considered one of the first generation of idol groups that helped lay the foundation for idol culture in South Korea.
GOD's achievements at that time were incredibly impressive. One of their songs sold up to 1.8 million copies – a rare record in K-pop history. Following this success, in 2002 JYP continued to debut singer Rain (Bi Rain). With his distinctive appearance and powerful performance skills, Rain quickly became an Asian phenomenon.
Not only successful in music, Rain also made a name for himself when he ventured into the field of film. The television drama Full House, in which he starred alongside Song Hye Kyo, became a sensation across Asia, catapulting both of them to A-list stardom.
Wonder Girls and their foray into the world.
In 2007, JYP Entertainment debuted its first girl group, Wonder Girls. This was another significant turning point. With a series of hits like "Tell Me," "So Hot," and especially "Nobody," the group quickly became a phenomenon in South Korea. Audiences even affectionately called them the "nation's girl group." Most notably, "Nobody" helped Wonder Girls make their mark on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US – a historic milestone for K-pop groups at that time.
In the following years, JYP Entertainment continuously launched many successful groups such as 2PM, miss A, GOT7, and TWICE. These artists not only achieved commercial success but also contributed to expanding the influence of K-pop in the international market. Thanks to this, JYP Entertainment gradually solidified its position and became one of the three largest entertainment companies in South Korea, often referred to as the "Big 3," alongside SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment. At one point, JYP Entertainment's stock value even surpassed that of SM Entertainment, demonstrating the strength of the company founded by Park Jin Young.
Despite its many successes, JYP Entertainment is not immune to controversy. Fans often jokingly call the company the "national trainee factory" for missing out on many talents who later became famous. Some notable names include IU, CL – the leader of 2NE1 – and Hani of EXID.
Sharing his thoughts on this, Park Jin Young admitted that he also felt regret that these artists didn't debut under his company. However, he believes that each person's success depends on "the right timing." He once said, "I myself failed when auditioning for SM Entertainment. But that helped me realize where I truly belong."
A new turning point in my career.
Besides his activities in the entertainment industry, Park Jin Young has recently been involved in cultural policy-related activities. According to an announcement on March 10th, JYP Entertainment stated that he will be stepping down from his position as internal director and will not be reappointed at the shareholders' meeting scheduled for March 26th. This decision comes approximately six months after he was appointed co-chairman of the Committee for Mass Cultural Exchange under President Lee Jae Myung.
Previously, in September 2025, the South Korean President's Office, through Chief of Staff Kang Hoon Sik, confirmed the appointment of Park Jin Young. He was introduced as one of the exemplary artists who contributed to bringing K-pop to the world. The South Korean government expects his participation to promote cultural exchange and help Korean popular culture spread more widely internationally.
On social media, Park Jin Young admitted that taking on government work wasn't an easy choice for someone working in the entertainment industry. He wrote, "Taking on government work makes me feel both pressured and anxious. But Kpop is facing a special opportunity, and I believe we need to seize this moment."
Despite stepping down from his internal leadership position at JYP Entertainment, Park Jin Young is not completely leaving the company. Instead, he plans to focus more on music creation, training the next generation of artists, and expanding projects related to the K-pop industry.
Red Velvet released a solo album, causing SM to receive criticism, dragging BLACKPINK into the fight?
Bảo Yến11:43:15 21/08/2025Compared to contemporary groups like BLACKPINK or TWICE, who have made clear solo strides and have been recognized in the international market, Red Velvet is still obscure. Is it because the group lacks talent or SM's wrong strategy?
