Images of Bach Tuyet bringing gifts to visit Dieu Hien at the Artists' Retirement Home in Thi Nghe quickly attracted attention. The reunion after many years moved the two artists, recalling their enduring friendship of over 60 years in the Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) world.
The recent reunion between Bach Tuyet and Dieu Hien has attracted much attention from fans of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera). After many years of working together, the friendship between the two female artists remains strong, as shown in their touching reunion moments.
As soon as they met, they immediately embraced each other like long-lost relatives reuniting. Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien even gently kissed People's Artist Bach Tuyet on the cheek, a simple gesture but one that contained the profound affection of a friendship that has lasted for more than half a century.
Sharing about this surprise visit, People's Artist Bach Tuyet said: "I was at the doctor's, planning to have Dung – my assistant – visit Hien, but then I remembered it had been a long time since we last met, so I took the opportunity to come over. I brought some clothes for Hien to wear during Tet, all very beautiful outfits."
According to the artist, when she heard her friend mention needing new clothes, she quickly prepared many outfits to give her. "Hien, just try them on and see if they look good. I'll pack more and bring them over sometime, so Hien can wear them as much as she wants, even to sleep in them," she said happily.
During the meeting, People's Artist Bach Tuyet personally took out each dress for her friend to try on. The evening gowns and traditional Vietnamese dresses, with their vibrant and sparkling colors, were carefully selected, much to the delight of Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien. Despite being over 80 years old, the artist enthusiastically tried on each outfit in front of the mirror, her radiant smile adding warmth to the atmosphere of the meeting.
During a friendly conversation, Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien unexpectedly inquired about her friend's singing career. Upon learning that People's Artist Bach Tuyet no longer performs regularly, she playfully chided her, "Why don't you sing anymore? You should sing to earn some money!"
In response to this question, People's Artist Bach Tuyet said that she is dedicating much of her time to developing the Cai Luong Academy – a place to train and pass on her skills to the younger generation of artists. "I do as much as I can. Even now, there are still a few students studying there. This profession requires lifelong learning; as long as someone is still eager to learn, I will continue to teach them," the female artist shared.
While People's Artist Bach Tuyet is renowned for her academic research and efforts to innovate Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien is more committed to traditional performance styles. Despite their differences in artistic direction, the friendship between the two female artists remains unchanged.
Thanks to her significant contributions to the arts, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 1988 and People's Artist in 2012. Notably, in 1995, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis on traditional Southeast Asian theater, becoming the first Doctor of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Meritorious Artist Dieu Hien (real name Lam Thi Hien, born in 1945) is a prominent figure in the traditional Vietnamese opera (cai luong) theater. She joined a theater troupe at a very young age and quickly established her talent through outstanding roles in plays such as "Nhuy Kieu General" and "Female General with the Peach Blossom Flag".
Thanks to her powerful voice, strong stage presence, and ability to combine singing and martial arts, she was affectionately called "The Foremost Martial Arts Actress" by her audience. In 1993, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State in recognition of her contributions to Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera).
