Musician Nguyen Van Chung admitted that it was difficult to write a song beyond "Continue to write the story of peace" â a hit that caused a fever and just received the "Special Song of the Year" award. Great success brings him joy but also sets a new and challenging journey.
Nguyen Van Chung walked on the stage of the Vietnam iContent 2025 gala with a light attitude, but left with the title of "Special Song of the Year" â a moment that surprised himself. Previously, "Continue to write the story of peace" was only in the nomination of the Inspirational Music category and did not win. When his name was announced at another, more iconic award, he said it felt like being given a spiritual gift that is difficult to get for the second time in his life.
What makes the song special, according to Chung, lies not only in the melody or message, but also in its spreading journey. Unlike previous songs that were associated with a single voice, this time he had the opportunity to accompany many artists: from Duyen Quynh, Vo Ha Tram, Dong Hung, Tung Duong to amateur voices. That resonance creates a rare "domino effect", especially when the country enters a series of important events such as the 50th anniversary of reunification and the 80th anniversary of National Day. A work written two years ago suddenly became the perfect piece of the puzzle for the present time.
The moment when 50,000 people sang the song in unison in the concert "Fatherland in the Heart" became a memory that he called "the most beautiful dream of a musician's life". Chung understands that the explosion is not easy to repeat, and should not try to repeat it. He frankly admitted that it is difficult to write a song with the same theme that surpasses himself, because the success of music not only comes from personal efforts but also depends on the emotions of the moment, the empathy of the audience and luck.
However, he did not let the pressure weigh heavily. After "Mother's Diary", he thought it would be difficult to write another song about motherhood with lasting vitality, but then he turned to fatherhood with "Father and Daughter". For him, music is a big world, no one needs to climb the old mountain forever when there are countless new peaks waiting ahead.
Chung also shared the reason why he persistently pursues compositions about his homeland â a topic that is difficult to sell and few people listen to. He believes that in order to reach young audiences, music about the country must take on a new breath: a modern rhythm, a perspective close to Gen Z and a message that reflects the spirit of the times. If you keep telling the story in the old way, the song will lose its authenticity to young people â who do not live in the context of war like the previous generation.
In the midst of his career sublimation, Nguyen Van Chung attracted attention when he decided... went to college at the age of 42. He said that this is the most suitable time, when his family is stable and he wants to deepen his knowledge to be more proactive in composing. After 23 years in the profession, he realizes that many of his achievements are tied to luck, and now is the time for him to want the next milestones to come from real ability. Studying music pedagogy is also a way for him to prepare for the future, as he hopes to pass on his experience to the younger generation who can continue the optimism and professional responsibility he pursues.
Despite his many achievements, Chung still considers himself a "new person" in the midst of the changing music flow day by day. From the cassette tape era to the digital music era, he has always taught himself, refreshed himself and constantly adapted. The decision to reduce the show to become a student once again shows that he not only wants to keep the fire of writing, but also wants to light new fires for those who come later.
