On the evening of December 11th, the Rever Cruise yacht became the special stage for the second season of the Best of Vietnam Fashion Show, part of Miss Cosmo 2025 . It was a night of fashion rich in cultural identity, proudly showcasing handcrafted ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dresses) worn by 73 international contestants.
Ho Chi Minh City Post Office replica stage: heritage shines brightly.
The most eye-catching feature is the stage, which is modeled after the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office, a classic French architectural landmark of the city. The curved dome, the symmetrical iron frames, and the familiar yellow and green color scheme are all recreated almost exactly as they were originally.
The organizers stated that placing the Post Office on a stage in the middle of the Saigon River aimed to create a point of intersection between heritage and modernity. Beyond its beauty, the stage design also allowed viewers to feel the cultural spirit of the city in every frame.
73 contestants donned traditional Vietnamese ao dai dresses, each dress telling a story.
In the evening lights, 73 beautiful women walked out showcasing designer Trung Dinh's "Heritage within Heritage" collection. All were handcrafted ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dresses), both soft and vibrant, like moving "paintings."
The main material is silk, dyed using the ombre technique, a manual process of blending and color transitions that requires considerable effort. On this silk background, the team of artisans hand-paints architectural structures and characteristic landscapes of many countries and territories. Looking at each dress, viewers can immediately recognize the symbol of each place, which is also the most difficult requirement of the designer: to paint accurately, completely, and easily recognizable.
But that's not all; beauty pageant fans, witnessing the contestants' stunning displays of traditional Vietnamese ao dai, also noticed the meticulous attention to detail of the Miss Cosmo organizers. Architectural landmarks with religious significance from various countries were respectfully depicted on the robes instead of the skirts, demonstrating absolute respect for all contestants.
Ao Dai: A long journey told concisely in a single show.
Trung Dinh shared that he wanted to use this collection to help international friends better understand the formation and development of the ao dai. Many foreigners still wonder why the ao dai is sometimes form-fitting, sometimes loose, sometimes modern, sometimes traditional; and according to him, this is an opportunity to "gently summarize" that journey.
From its form and proportions to its style, he maintains a traditional spirit to highlight Vietnamese cultural values. According to the designer, international recognition of the ao dai as a symbol of Vietnam cannot happen overnight.
"Cultural work requires patience. One or two shows are not enough; it requires perseverance and a genuine love for the ao dai."
Silk has been upgraded: more patterns, more brocade sheen.
This time, Trung Dinh continued to use silk but chose a different weaving style, with subtle patterns and a light brocade sheen. This helped the dress reflect light better, creating a rich visual effect on stage.
Every layer of color, every brushstroke, every weaving detail is geared towards a common goal: to honor the ao dai in a space deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, yet fresh enough to captivate international audiences.
The performance ignited a new passion for Vietnamese culture among young people.
The atmosphere on the cruise ship, the miniature replica of the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office, along with the music and graceful movements, helped the audience, especially young people, experience the ao dai from a more intimate perspective. More than just a traditional garment, the ao dai can be modern, creative, and even grace international stages if presented in a sophisticated way.
The second season of Fashion Show Best of Vietnam has concluded, but it has left a clear impression: Vietnamese heritage can truly shine, provided it is preserved with kindness and renewed with the creative spirit of today's Vietnamese people.
