Sharing his thoughts backstage at the "Shining Stars" show, Lam Hung talked about his career, his life, and his personal losses. The singer of "The Flirtatious Man" emotionally revealed that his biggest regret is not having had the chance to repay his mother's kindness and provide her with a comfortable life.
Singer Lam Hung is a familiar name to Vietnamese music lovers through a series of hit songs such as "The Flirtatious Man," "Singing for a River," "Dormitory on a Rainy Afternoon," "Airport Farewell Moment," "Don't Let Me Know You're Lying," etc. With his warm, deep voice and approachable style, he was once an idol for many young audiences during the era when ballads were popular in Vietnamese music. However, to achieve that position, Lam Hung went through a journey full of hardships and challenges, and often wavered between the spotlight and reality.
Before entering the arts, Lam Hung worked as a ship captain. His life took a different turn when he had the opportunity to meet Meritorious Artist Vu Linh. Recognizing his potential, the cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) artist wholeheartedly supported and facilitated Lam Hung's vocal training. When he first moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue his career, Lam Hung lived with Vu Linh to observe his professional work style. Recalling that time, he emotionally shared: "He told me to come and see how he worked. Later, he sent me to school, and my teacher advised me to sing pop music." This advice helped Lam Hung determine the right path for his career.
After more than 20 years in the arts, at nearly 50 years old, Lam Hung still persistently performs on stage. Besides performing, he also participates in many programs as a judge. Recently, the singer of "The Flirtatious Man" confirmed his role as a judge on the "Shining Stars" program alongside singer Duong Hong Loan. Lam Hung praised the contestants, noting that they not only possessed strong professional skills but also clearly showcased their modern musical personalities. Despite being a judge, he avoids harsh criticism and instead maintains an open, encouraging, and supportive attitude.
For Lam Hung, success lies not only in fame but also in maintaining his position through relentless effort. He frankly stated: "Anyone can succeed, but maintaining that success long-term depends on each person's willpower and character. In the past, there were times when I faltered, and I thought that since I was famous, I could just slow down and continue my activities, but that very thought harmed me. We cannot let our careers become complacent; we must always listen and learn, otherwise, we will be left behind."
He likened art to a highway, where those who are slow will be overtaken: "Art is like a highway; if you drive slowly, other cars will overtake you... I've seen others shining and felt ashamed of myself." From then on, Lam Hung always proactively updates himself on trends and understands audience tastes to avoid falling behind.
After many ups and downs, the biggest change in Lam Hung is his maturity in thinking, his grateful attitude towards life, and his filial piety. Speaking about his biggest regret, Lam Hung choked up as he said he hadn't had the chance to provide his mother with a comfortable life while she was still alive. "I promised my mother that if I didn't succeed in the city for three years, I would return and quit drinking alcohol and smoking. Even now, even during the most difficult times, I've never thought about indulging in alcohol," he confided.
