The minishow "Gratitude to Life - Gratitude to People" by singer Hong Phuong, granddaughter of the late Meritorious Artist Vu Linh, recently took place in Ho Chi Minh City.
The program marks the 10th anniversary since she first appeared on television with her performance of "Duyen Kiet" in the final round of the "Sao Noi Ngoi" (Star Succession) program.
That was also the first and only time that Meritorious Artist Vu Linh accepted an invitation to participate in a television game show, all because of his beloved nephew.
For Hong Phuong, bringing back "Duyen Kiet" in her minishow not only carries a nostalgic meaning but also serves as a profound tribute to her late uncle, as well as to her family and the artistic path she has been taught since childhood. On stage, the collaboration between Hong Phuong and artists Hong Nhung, Kim Thoa, Huynh That, along with the Hai Au dance troupe, created a deeply emotional segment. The audience repeatedly fell silent before erupting in prolonged applause.
In another segment of the performance, the act "Vinh Hoa Doan Truong" (The Glorious and Tragic Life) recreated a glimpse into Hong Phuong's life filled with hardships, challenges, and trials as she pursued her artistic career. In this segment, the voice and dialogue of Meritorious Artist Vu Linh were unexpectedly recreated on stage, as a reminder of his guidance and mentorship towards his granddaughter. According to the production team, this was also the main meaning of the performance – demonstrating the spirit of passing on skills and the motivation that helped her persevere in her singing career.
The minishow featured many close family members such as artist Hong Nhung (mother), artist Tieu Linh (uncle), and artist Kim Thoa (aunt). In addition, there were guest artists such as Hoang Dang Khoa, singer Luu Anh Loan, and musician Son Ha... contributing to a warm and close-knit atmosphere that blended family traditions with Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) art.
However, alongside praise for performances imbued with a nostalgic feel, the Ho Quang performance sparked mixed reactions. In her duet with artist Hoang Dang Khoa, Hong Phuong performed the Giao Dao style. Some viewers felt her voice wasn't suited to the Ho Quang technique, and that she seemed to be straining to complete the lyrics. Some even compared her to her mother and uncle, suggesting she was far inferior in terms of technical skill in this particular musical genre.
Nevertheless, there were comments defending and encouraging the singer. Many viewers acknowledged that this was not Hong Phuong's forte, and also recognized her efforts in learning to sing and practicing with Hoang Dang Khoa for a long time to bring the performance to the stage.
Hong Phuong is the daughter of artist Hong Nhung and the younger sister of Meritorious Artist Vu Linh. Born into a family with a tradition in the arts, she was exposed to the stage from a young age and was guided step by step by her mother and uncle. Previously, she organized a program to honor the role of Meritorious Artist Vu Linh as a "mentor" in her career.
The late Meritorious Artist Vu Linh passed away in March 2023 after battling cancer. He did not leave a will, leading to disputes among family members, especially between Hong Phuong and Hong Loan – the late artist's biological daughters. The two sides repeatedly argued and sued in court, prolonging the case and attracting significant public attention. During that period, Hong Phuong received much criticism from the audience.
Hong Phuong's mini-show is rumored to have low ticket sales and is causing controversy for including a performance that mocks Hong Loan.
JLO14:23:35 11/01/2026After the show ended, images appeared on social media suggesting that the concert was poorly attended and tickets sold poorly, with many empty seats in the auditorium. These images quickly became a topic of discussion. Some accounts commented that the show failed to attract viewers.
