Hoang Dang Khoa was born into a disadvantaged family and worked hard to pursue his passion for art.
When Hoàng Đăng Khoa moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue his career, he had the good fortune to meet and be mentored by Meritorious Artist Vũ Linh, who also gave him the opportunity to enter the art of cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera).
Hoang Dang Khoa is always grateful to the late Meritorious Artist Vu Linh for giving him the motivation to pursue his artistic career.
He recounted: "In 2008, while performing with a provincial music and dance troupe, I met Meritorious Artist Phuong Hang, who advised me to go to Saigon to develop my career. At that time, I was the breadwinner of the family, so I didn't dare go far away for fear of not having anyone to take care of my family. It wasn't until 2010 that I went to Saigon and was fortunate enough to meet Binh Tinh (daughter of the late artist Duc Loi and playwright Bach Mai). At that time, I didn't know how to sing Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) at all, but I greatly admired Meritorious Artist Vu Linh. So Binh Tinh introduced me to Mr. Linh. After I sang a line for him, Mr. Linh said I could sing it, and advised me to keep trying and pursue Cai Luong if I had the opportunity."
In 2011, Khoa organized a live show called "Having You Makes Me So Happy" at Stage 126 in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides pop music, he also performed excerpts from Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera). At that time, Mr. Vu Linh taught Khoa for three days before the performance. For Khoa, those three days were a huge asset, a driving force that motivated him to pursue Cai Luong later on.
In 2015, Hoang Dang Khoa decided to create the Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) program "Keeping the Passion Alive." In early 2016, he staged the play "Giang San My Nhan," handling all aspects of the production himself. At the time, many people questioned his willingness to do so, saying that Cai Luong was no longer as popular, and that he was too young to focus on music or film instead. However, Khoa sold out all the tickets for that play. He produced seven "Keeping the Passion Alive" programs in two years, from 2016 to 2018.
By mid-2018, the male artist was adopted by playwright Bach Mai, head of the Huynh Long traditional opera troupe, and joined the Huynh Long troupe. He was taught by Bach Mai and assigned to some of the troupe's tasks.
However, later on, he left the Huynh Long troupe because he was reportedly in conflict with Binh Tinh, even cutting off all contact with her.
He also recounted how artist Vu Linh once refused to arrange a song for him because he wanted to lip-sync a line from a Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) performance. Because of this lesson, Hoang Dang Khoa never considered lip-syncing in any show.
He recalled: "When I did my live show in 2011, I was new to the profession, I didn't know how to sing Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), I only sang based on feeling, I sang whatever artist Vu Linh taught me. At that time, because I wasn't confident singing Cai Luong on stage since it was my first time, I asked Mr. Linh if I could lip-sync one line of the traditional opera, just one line. Mr. Linh taught me: 'If an artist only knows how to lip-sync on stage, that artist has no value. If you try to sing live, sing for real, then even if you sing a little badly, the audience will still love and accept you.' That guidance gave me the confidence and determination to sing."
From that day until now, Khoa has always remembered that advice. When he goes on stage, Khoa always sings with all his heart, with the dedication of an artist, and never dares to do anything wrong. For Khoa, that is the biggest and most profound memory he has received since starting his career."
When the controversy surrounding Vu Linh's family arose, Hoang Dang Khoa chose to remain silent. He affirmed that he supported Hong Phuong artistically because they both shared a passion for the stage and did not interfere in the singer's family's private life. This was also a sign of respect he had for the family of artist Vu Linh.
Hong Phuong diligently practiced, wanting to follow in Vu Linh's footsteps, but her performance of Ho Quang singing was immediately criticized.
Keng17:56:17 13/01/2026The minishow "Gratitude to Life, Gratitude to People" by singer Hong Phuong, granddaughter of the late Meritorious Artist Vu Linh, recently took place in Ho Chi Minh City. The program marked the 10th anniversary of her television debut with the performance of "Duyen Kiet" on the show "Sao Noi Ngoi".
