During more than half a century of dedication, she was known as "Peacock Princess" or "Dance Goddess of the East" thanks to her performances of the legendary Peacock Dance. Now, at the age of nearly 70, this outstanding artist is preparing for a new historical milestone, bringing her masterpiece to perform in Vietnam for the first time in the spring of 2026.

Coming from the mountainous land and a relationship with dance

Yang Liping was born in 1958 in a village in Eryuan County, Yunnan Province, China. She comes from the Bai ethnic minority, a community known for its rich cultural and artistic traditions. Unlike many professional artists who have received formal training from a young age in prestigious academies, Yang Liping's childhood was spent surrounded by the majestic nature and rustic folk dances of her homeland.

From a young age, little Duong Liping showed talent and a strong passion for dance. Without going to school, she self-studied, felt and absorbed the essence of traditional dances. Her professional artistic path began when she joined the Xishuangbanna Song and Dance Troupe at the age of 13. This was the stepping stone that took her from a mountain girl to the stage. Her career really took off in 1980 when she moved to work at the Central Ethnic Song and Dance Troupe.

Peak career and journey to bring Yunnan to the world

Yang Liping’s career has been a long journey of constant creativity, combining tradition and modernity. She has not only recreated ancient dances but also breathed life into them and elevated them to international-class stage art.

In 1986, Yang Liping choreographed and performed the dance The Spirit of Peacock. This work immediately caused a stir in the Chinese dance world, winning her first prize in the National Song and Dance Competition. She used her body, in an extraordinary way, to recreate the grace, nobility and sacredness of the peacock, a symbol of luck and beauty in Southeast Asian culture.

After this success, she continued to affirm her position through a series of great works, the most prominent of which were two magnificent dance and music programs: Dynamic Yunnan and Impression Lijiang.

  • Yunnan Image (2003): This masterpiece synthesizes folk dances from more than 10 ethnic minorities in Yunnan. The show became a cultural phenomenon, winning the top prize of the China Dance Festival and touring widely around the world. The work is not only a performance but also a living museum of Yunnan folk culture.

  • Thuy Nguyet (2004): The work continues the success, expressing the harmony between nature and human soul through poetic dances.

Yang Liping proved that folk dance could conquer a global audience. She became an artistic director and founded her own dance troupes, training a generation of talented dancers to carry on her legacy.

The secret to maintaining an "ageless body" at the age of 70

One of the factors that makes Duong Liping always the center of attention of the media and the public is her amazing ability to maintain her figure. Even though she is 67 years old, she still has a slim, supple and graceful body like when she was in her twenties.

To maintain the flexibility needed for the highly technical dance moves, especially the long and graceful fingers that resemble the head of a peacock, she had to follow a very strict diet and exercise regimen. She almost completely eliminated foods that cause weight gain such as starch, sugar and fat. Her diet mainly consisted of green vegetables, fresh fruits and nuts.

She once shared that for a dancer, the body is the most important tool of expression, and taking care of it is an indispensable part of art. This sacrifice has earned her the nickname "the ageless woman", making the public admire not only her talent but also her extraordinary discipline. Many people even compare her to a fairy descended to earth, ethereal and not subject to the influence of time.

Wings to Vietnam: Spring 2026

After conquering demanding audiences in Europe, America, and across Asia, Duong Liping is preparing for a highly anticipated event: bringing her dance masterpiece to perform in Vietnam for the first time.

The "Peacock of the Dance Village" spreading its wings on the Vietnamese stage is expected to create a big fever, giving Vietnamese audiences the opportunity to admire with their own eyes the ultimate beauty and sophistication in each dance move that has made her name.

This event is also a testament to the strong cultural connection between the two countries, as the folk dance art of Yunnan's ethnic minorities has many similarities and is close to the culture of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.
