In an interview, Miss Universe 1991 Lupita Jones did not hesitate to comment on her compatriot, the reigning Miss Universe Fatima Bosch.
Lupita's statements are causing a stir on beauty forums.
Lupita said: "Frankly, Fatima Bosch didn't behave like a beauty queen, and I feel compelled to say this, even though I know my statements are often misinterpreted. But I still maintain my position that a beauty queen shouldn't abruptly end interviews with the media."
Lupita Jones's remarks are believed to be a criticism of Miss Universe Fatima Bosch for walking out of an interview with Telemundo in the US last month.
Lupita added that Fatima was beautiful, naturally charming and captivating, but she didn't seem to realize she had stepped into a completely different position. "She has climbed three more steps in life," she said.
Lupita asserted that Miss Universe is a title with global influence and representative image. She argued that Fatima's status is no longer that of a representative of a single locality like Tabasco (Fatima's hometown) or some small city.
"She's no longer the most beautiful flower of Tabasco; now she's Miss Universe. Fatima can't just appear and frolic like a festival queen; she needs to become a worthy representative of Mexico on the international stage. Even if I face criticism for saying this, I still believe it's the right thing to say," she added.
Lupita Jones was the first Mexican woman to ever win the Miss Universe title. Meanwhile, Fatima Bosch was the fourth Mexican woman to win the Miss Universe title. Both are considered famous and influential beauties in their home countries.
Lupita Jones is known for her outspoken and serious personality. Therefore, many people were not surprised when she dared to publicly criticize Fatima Bosch on social media.
Lupita Jones, born in 1967, was crowned Miss Universe 1991 in a convincing manner. Years later, Lupita Jones took on the role of national director of Mexicana Universal, selecting the annual winner to compete in Miss Universe.
Lupita Jones is considered the driving force behind the success of Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete and Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza, as well as many other Mexican beauties with impressive achievements at the Miss Universe competition.
Known for her toughness, Lupita Jones has never hesitated to confront powerful figures like Donald Trump, the former owner of the Miss Universe competition. With her strong and assertive personality, Lupita Jones is known as the "iron woman" in Mexico's beauty pageant world.
In fact, this is not the first time a reigning Miss Universe has found herself in a similar situation. The history of the competition has recorded many cases of winners or runners-up facing controversy over their style, statements, or behavior after winning the crown. These stories show a significant gap between the glamorous image on stage and the real-life pressures that beauty queens face when they become the center of global attention.
This story also reflects a shift in how the public perceives beauty pageants. While in the past, beauty queens were often portrayed on a pedestal with an almost perfect image, today, social media makes it easy to expose any flaws, mistakes, or personal emotions. This both gives the public a chance to better understand the true person behind the crown and makes the pressure on beauty queens more intense than ever before.
Furthermore, the controversy also raises questions about how feedback and criticism should be given in the beauty pageant world. Many argue that honest feedback is essential to maintaining the value and prestige of the Miss Universe title.
