Dubai rocked by airstrikes amid escalating Middle East conflict. International student Ngo Ngoc Gia Han experienced a terrifying night: the flight was canceled, luggage was stuck and saw a rocket tearing through the sky right on the roof of the dormitory.
The fateful flight and the aerial missile bunker
On the evening of February 28, Sharjah International Airport (UAE) was engulfed in chaos. Ngo Ngoc Gia Han (21 years old), a second-year student at SP Jain School of International Management, had just settled down on the plane to depart for Georgia when she received an emergency notice: The entire flight was canceled due to "-for-tat airstrikes" between regional powers. "At that time, the space seemed to freeze. Thousands of people rushed towards the information counter in panic, the cries of children and distraught faces were everywhere," Gia Han recalled in shock.
Things got worse when her checked luggage could not be retrieved immediately due to warehouse paralysis. With only a small backpack on her shoulders, the female student was forced to return to the dormitory at Academic City in a state of extreme insecurity. However, the journey back pushed her into a more difficult situation. As soon as she stepped into the campus, Han was stunned to see the bright rocket fragments tearing through the night, exploding right above the roof of the building. An extremely loud explosion resounded, causing the entire building to shake violently, bookshelves collapsed, and glass doors shook. It is no longer an image on the news, but a harsh reality that is directly threatening life.
The escape in the night and the "lifebuoy" from relatives
In the face of a critical situation, Gia Han decided to leave this area immediately. However, ride-hailing apps such as Uber or Careem are completely paralyzed; Dozens of taxi companies have refused to move into the area at risk of air strikes. In desperation, the support of the Vietnamese community has become the only salvation. After receiving guarantees and support from her roommate's family, until 9 p.m., Han was able to contact her aunt who was living in Dubai to relocate to a safer place.
Although confused, Gia Han still expressed confidence in the UAE government's ability to control the situation. She shared that Dubai was the most dynamic and modern international environment she had ever studied, but the political incident completely changed the situation in just a few hours. Currently, the female student is trying to keep in touch with relatives in Vietnam and comply with the safety guidelines of the local government, while the aviation system in Dubai and neighboring countries such as Qatar is still in a tight state of closure.
Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues an emergency protection order
By the afternoon of March 2, the wave of flight cancellations had spread globally, affecting both major airlines such as British Airways and Air France. In the face of complicated developments in the Middle East, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam has directed the Vietnamese Embassy in the UAE and representative agencies in the region to closely monitor the situation, keep regular contact with the Vietnamese student and labor community to prepare necessary citizen protection plans.
Authorities recommend that Vietnamese citizens in the affected areas should absolutely limit movement to hot spots, closely monitor announcements from local authorities and keep in constant contact with diplomatic missions. Gia Han's story is a reminder of the fierceness of war and the importance of equipping Vietnamese students with emergency response skills when studying in areas with complex geopolitical fluctuations.
