The wish of the youngest daughter of the late artist Thuong Tin in the days leading up to Tet touched many hearts; she only wished for a new set of clothes to wear to welcome the new year. A simple wish, but enough to leave listeners speechless with compassion.
The story begins with a text message shared by screenwriter Nguyen Thieu Hoang. The message was a conversation between him and the youngest daughter of the late artist Thuong Tin. Previously, during a visit to his hometown for the funeral of a close friend, Mr. Hoang had promised the little girl that if she studied hard and achieved high grades, he would reward her with a new set of clothes. This seemingly simple promise became the motivation for her to try harder in her studies.
The day she received her report card, the little girl immediately texted to share the good news. Her words were short and innocent, yet filled with anticipation. She didn't boast about her achievement with lengthy explanations, simply stating that she had done well and softly asking, "Uncle, do you still remember your promise?" It was this innocence that left the reader speechless.
What's most heartbreaking is knowing that Tet (Vietnamese New Year) is just around the corner, yet she still doesn't have a single new outfit at home. Every day at her extra classes, she wears the same pair of flared jeans. It's not because she only likes one style of clothing, but because her family can't afford to buy her new clothes. The old jeans accompany her from school to her extra classes, from everyday life to the end of the year. It might seem like a small detail, but it brings a lump to many people's throats.
For a child, wishing for new clothes to wear during Tet (Lunar New Year) is not a luxury. However, in her circumstances, that dream becomes fragile and full of anxieties. She doesn't ask for beautiful clothes, doesn't mention shoes or expensive items. All she wishes for is "a new set of clothes," enough to make her feel like she's celebrating Tet like her peers.
Knowing that the little girl had been longing for that small gift for days, screenwriter Nguyen Thieu Hoang didn't hesitate. He asked his wife to order more clothes, hats, shoes, etc., and send them back to their hometown for her. It wasn't anything extravagant, but it was a very timely act of kindness. These items not only had material value, but also represented the warmth of human kindness, the feeling of being remembered and loved during a time of need.
That gesture touched many, not because of the value of the gift, but because of how the adults quietly kept their promise to a child. In the child's world, that promise meant so much. It gave her the belief that her efforts were recognized, that those around her were still watching and caring for her.
Looking at the story, many people not only feel sorry for the little girl, but also remember the image of the late artist Thuong Tin – a talented artist of his time whose life was full of ups and downs. Now, he has passed away, leaving his young daughter with a long journey of growing up ahead. What everyone hopes for is not that she will have expensive things, but that she will always be healthy, well-behaved, and excel in her studies.
My only hope is that, somewhere far away, the talented father can rest assured knowing his daughter is still being protected and growing up surrounded by kindness. A new set of clothes may wear out with time, but human kindness, timely care, and the faith sown in that child's heart will remain for a long time, as a warm memory every time Tet (Lunar New Year) comes around.
