Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit has frozen the account of Raúl Rocha Cantú, the president of Miss Universe, after FGR investigated him on suspicion of trafficking in banned substances, weapons and fuel.
The Miss Universe contest is continuing to face a wave of legal scandals and controversies related to the results of the contest, causing a stir in international public opinion. The latest developments stem from criminal charges against Mr. Rocha Cantú, the co-owner of Miss Universe, and also highlight issues surrounding organizational transparency and fairness in judging.
According to a VNA reporter in Mexico City, citing the prestigious daily La Jornada, the Mexican Financial Enforcement Office (UIF), under the Ministry of Finance, has blocked Rocha Cantú's accounts in Mexico. This action comes amid an ongoing criminal investigation into this individual and other co-owners.
Previously, in November 2024, Mexico's Federal Prosecutor's Office (FGR) opened an investigation into the President of Miss Universe, related to allegations of involvement in organized crime, trafficking in banned substances, weapons, and fuel smuggling. The agency has issued 13 arrest warrants against the individuals involved, including Rocha Cantú, demonstrating the seriousness of the incident.
Reforma newspaper reported that from November 2025, Mr. Rocha Cantú has proposed to enjoy the status of a "collaborating witness" to cooperate with the investigating agency, but so far the prosecution has not made an official confirmation of this proposal. The investigation file was opened from 2024 based on an anonymous complaint sent to the authorities on November 29, 2024, alleging the activities of a criminal organization related to many illegal fields.
In addition to the current charges, Rocha Cantú is also suspected of involvement in the horrific incident at Casino Royale in Monterrey, Nuevo León, in August 2011. This event caused the death of 52 people and shocked Mexican public opinion. The casino is managed by CYMSA and Entertainment Enterprises of Mexico, of which Rocha Cantú is a shareholder. In July, Baltazar Saucedo Estrada, identified as the mastermind of the incident, was sentenced to 135 years in prison.
On the business side, Mr. Rocha Cantú has acquired 50% of Miss Universe shares from JKN Global Group in 2024 through Legacy Holding Group USA. This decision made him one of the most powerful figures in the world-famous beauty pageant organization, but at the same time put him at the center of legal investigations and fairness controversies in the pageant.
The Miss Universe 2025 pageant, which took place in November, has seen controversy arise around the results. A Thai coordinator has condemned Mexico's contestant Fátima Bosch, who has just been crowned Miss Universe 2025. Accordingly, two judges announced their withdrawal from the judging board, in which one alleged interference in the results, raising questions about the transparency and fairness of the competition.
Not only the exam marking, the Thai police are also investigating allegations of contest promotion, which is related to illegal advertising for online casinos. These developments have made Miss Universe not only a beauty playground, but also a focus of international legal and public opinion.
