Episode 6 of Sing! Asia 2025 â Quarterfinal Round 1 â witnessed the competition between 5 solo singers against 5 door-holding singers, in order to find 4 names to go straight to the Semi-Finals. In this series of performances, the representative of Vietnam â singer Phuong My Chi â once again captured the spotlight with the Vietnamese performance of Phu Hoa Ball, combined with the typical "dolphin" high notes.
Vietnamese and Chinese social networks are simultaneously excited about her contest. Many viewers praised the ability to control the voice, the sophistication in the way the song was handled as well as the national spirit conveyed through each melody.
From a voice that was once prominent with Southern folk music, Phuong My Chi has gradually transformed to step into the big Asian playground. Her victory over her heavyweight opponent Hoang Linh â the singer known as the "queen of melody" â is considered a special milestone. Many international audiences have affectionately called her by the nickname: "the general of Vietnam".
Since the Quarterfinals, Phuong My Chi's name has been expected by the international media and the audience to go straight to the Finals. However, also from here, the question is: who can stand in the way of representing Vietnam? And if they want to do that, which song do they need to choose that is "lethal" enough?
After many discussions, an answer was constantly mentioned on Cbiz music forums: Left Hand Only Moon â the famous soundtrack performed by singer Slap Dinh Dinh.
"Left Hand Pointing to the Moon" â a psychological blow from music?
Appearing in the cult historical film Huong Honey Like Smoke in 2018, The Left Hand of the Moon was initially not promoted as the title song. However, the special melody and deep expression of Slap Dinh Dinh helped the song "escape" and quickly became a cross-border music phenomenon. Until now, this song is still considered China's "national treasure of music", especially on Chinese music platforms.
Not only attracted by its beautiful melody and deep lyrics, The Left Hand of the Moon is highly appreciated for the cultural depth it conveys. Different from simple soundtracks, the song has a meditative vein, oriental philosophy and a quality of music that is difficult to mix with any genre.
The special feature that creates the "soul" of the song lies in the voice of Tat Dinh Dinh â a female artist born in 1979, famous for her style of intersection between tradition and contemporary. In The Left Hand of the Moon, she is commented not only singing but also "chanting", telling sutras, bringing listeners into surreal space. The voice is resonant, light, and mysterious, making listeners feel like they are entering another world.
The song opens with a poetic image: "The left hand points to the moon, the right hand takes the pink silk string". It is not just a description of action but a symbol of fate, for the relationship between heaven and earth. The lyrics are like a chant for human life, blending the sound of the wind, the moon and the sound of people â a gentle place is also a heavy place.
Art Trap at Sing! Asia?
If Left Hand Only Moon is chosen as the song to face Phuong My Chi in the upcoming Semi-Finals, it will be the opponent's high-handed "chess move". Unlike songs that show off ordinary vocal techniques, Left Hand Only Moon requires the performer to feel the spirit and philosophy of the song â something that is not easy to achieve even with a good voice.
In Vietnam, there have been many artists who have tried covers such as Van Mai Huong, Trung Quan, Nam Em or Ha Nhi, but they all admit that this is a song that is difficult to "touch" the original. Therefore, if a Chinese contestant performs this song with the right voice, both technical and imbued with local culture, the pressure on Phuong My Chi's shoulders will not be small. In particular, in the context that she is the rare contestant representing Southeast Asia, every tactical choice can directly affect the result.
Many people are concerned that The Left Hand of the Moon can be used as a "trick" to create a psychological advantage, draw the sympathy of the audience and judges for the Chinese contestant â thereby pushing the Vietnamese representative into a difficult position. Because, not only a song, this song is also a symbol of national music in a country of billions of people â where emotional and cultural factors are often highly appreciated.
