More than 10 years after her landmark surgery, Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance with the scar on her chest. This moment was captured on the cover of Time France magazine, marking a special milestone for the actress.
The historic cover of Time France
On December 15th, Time France officially unveiled its first-ever cover, featuring Angelina Jolie as the central figure. This is Time's first French-language edition in over a century since the magazine's founding in 1923.
Time's launch of a French edition is seen as a strategic move, targeting readers in France and the global French-speaking community. And Angelina Jolie became the opening choice, a global icon, possessing both cinematic appeal and representing socially impactful stories.
First time publicly revealing a scar in over a decade.
What made the Time France cover quickly attract attention was not only Angelina Jolie's fame, but also a special detail: the scar from the double mastectomy she underwent in 2013.
In the photograph, the actress, born in 1975, is dressed in black, with one hand resting on her bare chest. The subtle composition and just the right amount of lighting make the scar clearly visible but not ostentatious. It's not a display of ostentation, but rather a way of telling a story through images, calm and proactive.
"I want to stand alongside other women."
In the accompanying interview, Angelina Jolie shared the reason she chose this time to publicly reveal her scar. For her, it's not just a personal story.
"I share these scars with many women I love. I'm always moved when I see other women dare to share their scars," Angelina said. The actress said she wants to partner with Time France in spreading knowledge about breast health, prevention, and understanding breast cancer.
The message was conveyed gently, without being overbearing, in keeping with the spirit Angelina has pursued for many years.
The 2013 decision and the story behind it.
In 2013, Angelina Jolie attracted worldwide attention when she announced she had undergone a double mastectomy as a preventative measure against cancer. This decision stemmed from her carrying a BRCA1 gene mutation – a factor that puts her at a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer than the average person.
The biggest shock came from her family. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of breast and ovarian cancer. Jolie's maternal grandmother also passed away at a very young age. These losses became the reason Angelina chose to act early. After the surgery, she wrote an essay for a major American newspaper, frankly sharing that her risk of developing breast cancer had decreased from 87% to below 5%. For Angelina, it was a way for her to tell her children: "Mom will stay."
Two years later, Angelina announced that she had undergone surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. Each time she shared this, she emphasized that it was a personal choice, based on medical information and her own circumstances.
In recent interviews, including one with Hello! magazine in October, Angelina affirmed that she has no regrets. "I'm not saying everyone should do the same. The important thing is that women have the right to choose, with the right information and support they need," she stated.
Cinema goes hand in hand with life.
Angelina Jolie's appearance on the cover of Time France is also linked to her new film project, Couture, written and directed by Alice Winocour. The film is scheduled to premiere in France in February 2026.
In Couture, Angelina plays Maxine Walker, an American director invited to France to make a film during Paris Fashion Week. Midway through the creative process, Maxine receives news that she has breast cancer, forcing her to confront life-changing choices.
Scars, but not weaknesses.
For the public, Angelina Jolie's image on the cover of Time France is more than just a fashion or cinematic moment. It's a reminder that the human body carries its own story, and daring to confront those marks is a form of strength.
